Pocket Guide: Ottershaw Runnymede Hotels

Runnymede, four miles from Surrey, is one of England's most iconic historic sites. It was here that King John was effectively coerced by his rebellious barons into signing the Magna Carta in 1215, which had the effect of limiting royal power for centuries to come. If you're based at a Surrey hotel in Windsor or elsewhere close by, you really must come along to Runnymede and see where democracy in England had its beginnings. The peasants had to wait quite a bit longer than the barons for more equal treatment (no surprise there, then!), but this is where the Feudal System finally started to unravel and things began to change for the better for the downtrodden population!

What to Do near Runnymede

The whole Borough of Runnymede in fact has had a long and eventful history. All of these Thames Basin villages and towns, from Chertsey and Egham to Ottershaw, New Haw and Virginia Water, have their own individual histories and traditions, so Runnymede is a fascinating area to visit from your Surrey B&B, guesthouse or hotel. If you want to do some shopping, Windsor is just a short drive away for excellent malls and restaurants, and it also has a famous Guildhall. The immediate surroundings of Runnymede, which is just a level grassy meadow, are criss-crossed with walking routes, and most visitors come to see the attractive memorial pavilion here, erected in 1957 to mark the spot.

Runnymede Countryside

The north-western part of Runnymede cuts right across Windsor Great Park, 2000 acres of grass and woodland which stretches from Windsor Castle to Snow Hill three miles away. The hill has a statue of George III at its summit and the surrounding fields are popular with walkers and cyclists. This part of Runnymede in fact makes a good family destination if you're based at a Windsor hotel or a guesthouse in Surrey close by. The historic part of Runnymede is also close to the ancient villages of Egham, Englefield Green and Thorpe, and Virginia Water to the west is surrounded by beautiful woodland. Book in to a hotel like the Savill Court Hotel in Egham or The Runnymede-on-Thames for an interesting visit.
