Pocket Guide: Kent

The area of southeast England surrounding London was once covered by old Saxon kingdoms, and today because of its proximity to London the towns and villages of this region are a magnet for commuters. However, each region has successfully managed to maintain its own distinctive identity, and Kent is no exception. Here you'll find a gently rolling landscape of green and pleasant hills levelling off towards the Fens of East Anglia, dotted with cathedrals, stately homes, royal palaces and old universities. For the visitor, there are numerous B&Bs, guesthouses and hotels to stay at, suitable for every taste and pocket.

Kent - the Garden of England

With its mild climate, fertile soil and regular rainfall throughout the year, the Kentish countryside has excelled at fruit growing since the Romans planted the first orchards here almost two millennia ago. There are numerous vineyards across Kent in areas such as Lamberhurst now that the English wine-making industry is starting to really take off, and pairs, plums and apples remain important crops here, especially the latter. Visitors come for the beauties of the Kent countryside as well as for the attractions of historic cities such as Canterbury and Dover, and with so many hotels in Kent, as well as B&Bs and family-run guesthouses, there's never any shortage of accommodation.

Hops and Hopping in Rural Kent

Oast houses with their distinctive angled roofs are a characteristic feature of the Kentish countryside. Many have now been turned into houses but some are still functioning as they have done for centuries. Their original use was to dry hops for beer production and over a million tons of it is still produced annually here. The hops are picked by machine nowadays, but until well into the 20th Century this job was done by hand by thousands of families from the East End of London, who came to Kent for a working holiday and stayed in barns. Even today, although the capital is so near you still feel as if you're a world away in the countryside of Kent.
