Gravesend is situated on the south bank of the River Thames in northwest Kent, just at the point where the ancient chalk hills of the sweeping North Downs start to level out. Set in beautiful stretches of unspoilt Kentish countryside, Gravesend has excellent transport links with the capital, most importantly in the past by river and now also by rail and road. Amongst its other attractions, Gravesend is home to oldest surviving pier built entirely of cast iron, dating back to 1834. Come to Gravesend and stay at one of the many local hotels, guesthouses or B&Bs to explore a beautiful and historic region of Kent.
Milton Chantry in Gravesend has had many uses over the centuries. The building is mainly made from brick but you can still see its original 14th century roof - they certainly knew how to build in those days! The chantry was successively part of a larger hospital building, a chapel, a pub and a barracks for Georgian troops. During World War Two it was a gas decontamination centre and is currently an important part of Gravesend's Heritage Quarter, with an interesting onsite museum.
There are regular boat cruises up and down the River Thames from Gravesend, popular with kids and adults alike. Enjoy an educational and enjoyable trip as you cruise past the old ruins and monuments that line this stretch of the historic waterway, with an on-board guide pointing out all the sights. This makes a great activity for a summer's afternoon excursion from your hotel or guesthouse base in Kent.
Yachts, paddle steamers and barges sail daily from the Town Pier Pontoon, and another popular attraction in the area is the magnificent Sikh temple, the Gudwara, which is one of the finest and biggest of its kind in Europe. The Cold War Bunker in Gravesend has a radiation monitoring post from the 1950s. Stay at a local Kent hotel such as The Clarendon Royal Hotel or The Leather Bottle and explore these and many of the other attractions in this part of Kent.
