Gibside is a National Trust estate in Tyne and Wear, just eight miles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Although the main house here is just a shell, there's a Palladian chapel, stable block and beautiful gardens to explore, as well as a woodland play trail and adventure play area for children. You can reach Gibside by car or bus, and free parking is available on site. If you're looking for a hotel in the nearby area you'll find guesthouses, historic country house hotels and independent hotels in Newcastle, as well as chain and independent hotels in Gateshead. So there's something to suit all budgets.
Historic hotels close to Gibside include those in Beamish, many of which offer individually decorated rooms, the perfect antidote to chain hotel boredom. With amenities such as room service, free wired internet and free self-parking, you're sure to enjoy a comfortable stay. For those who prefer their accommodation with additional amenities, you'll find some four-star chain hotels in Newcastle-upon-Tyne provide extras such as Egyptian cotton sheets, DVD players and minibars in guestrooms.
Ask at your hotel if they can pack you a picnic, because Gibside is the perfect place to unwind with a family picnic and explore the beautiful gardens. There's a farm shop here selling local produce and a twice-monthly farmer's market, as well as a café. Or you could always head to Gibside Pub, located on the estate. This is a quirky place to enjoy some real ale and it's one of only two National Trust-managed pubs in the country. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the countryside here too, with cycling routes, walking routes and some of the North-East's best golf clubs as well.
If you're here with the family then you'll find hotels in Gateshead and Newcastle-upon-Tyne are used to providing helpful little extras free of charge, such as cribs or roll-away beds for kids. There are even some pet-friendly hotels, but check that you're able to bring your pet along before you turn up.
