We have just spent a wonderful 14 days at Zilwa and it really exceeded our expectations. We travelled with 2 children (7 and 3) and there were lots to keep them entertained during the day and evening. The staff were amazing - yes they are laid back and service isn't snappy and spot on all the time, but they are the most friendly and engaging of any hotel staff we have ever seen and that made it all the more special. They are not scripted, trained to within an inch of their lives and the same as everywhere else - they are genuinely interested, involved and considerate people who want you to enjoy Zilwa and Mauritius. So many of these large hotels will have me saying 'to be honest, you could be anywhere in the world' as they are all set up around the same model. Zilwa is a breath of fresh air and you really know you are in Mauritius! The resort is spread out and adds to the relaxed feel - you never feel cramped in around a pool and fighting for a lounger at 6am! Special mentions to Curly, Angelito and Sunil who were just outstanding and work really hard to make sure you are part of the Zilwa family during your stay - but there are also so many more we could mention. One gripe would be the sofa bed in the family room - a bit too basic, but then every night we passed out exhausted so we didn't lose any sleep! I can't recommend this place enough and would love to go back again!
Highly recommended. Staff particularly helpful. Wonderful food in Playa Restaurant. Good sized rooms with very comfortable beds. Delightful quiet location. Travelled during Mauritius off season - August (cooler, wetter and windier).
This was our honeymoon trip, and it was just about perfect. The staff are really attentive, and it seemed like every one of them was taking personal responsibility for making sure we were looked after. We arrived on an early flight, but a room was made available within an hour. The transfer went smoothly, and the rep was very helpful. We got a 'lagoon view' room, that still had a great view of the sea, which was turned down three times a day. The food was good and plentiful, although the veggie options were a bit limited, and the entertainments were varied and high quality. Drinks and food prices are at hotel levels and in Euros, so if you're half-board you might want to get a taxi to the local supermarket for supplies. The Connections excursions were well organised, and the guides friendly and enthusiastic. For our last week, we booked a taxi from the stand outside the hotel to see the island. Don't leave Ile aux Cerfs too late - you'll probably want to get back! Expect to haggle when shopping but we didn't find the prices for clothes to be any cheaper than the UK though. If you're looking for souvenirs, look in Mahebourg as they're significantly cheaper than the shops elsewhere. When we went over it was Rs50 = 1 pound so if you want an easy way to convert without using a calculator, multiply the Rupee figure by 2 and knock off the last two digits, so Rs1000 = 1000x2 = 2000 = 20.00 or so. Overall, this was a great holiday in a good location, and we'd definitely go back.
Wonderful holiday, relaxing at times and energetic when we wanted it. Facilities great with fabulous kids club. Although we only used it twice, the staff we lovely. Catamaran day trip a highlight & would recommend it. We did it with an 8 & 2 year old and we all enjoyed it. Grounds stunning. Food heavenly. We upgraded to all inclusive once there as it's not terribly close to restaurants etc. It's not cheap but we loved it.
