Pocket Guide: Vienna

The beautiful city of Vienna is not just Austria’s administrative capital. It is also a hub for history, art and cuisine, boasting some of the finest restaurants, hotels, shops, museums and galleries in Europe. Whether you visit Vienna for business or pleasure, you’ll find it hard not to be charmed by its cobbled back streets, cosy pubs, spectacular architecture and bustling cultural scene.

What’s more, the accommodation available in Vienna caters to all kinds of travellers. Whether you're a backpacker seeking cheap hotels or a business executive searching for comfort and convenience, you'll find that Vienna has it all.

Vienna: Where to Stay

There are 23 districts within Vienna, the innermost being the Innere Stadt or Old Town. This is the best place to stay if you want to immerse yourself in the city’s museum and gallery scene. The Innere Stadt is home to St. Stephen's Cathedral, Hofburg Imperial Palace, the Spanish Riding School and the Vienna State Opera. Across the Danube Canal you’ll find the district of Leopoldstadt. Home of the Ernst Happel football stadium and the Prater, an iconic amusement park with a giant ferris wheel at its heart.

Vienna’s other districts can provide highlights like the Aqua Terra Zoo, Belvedere Palace and the Sigmund Freud Museum. And, because the U-Bahn subway system and trams provide such an extensive public transport network, you don’t have to worry about getting from A to B.

Business Hotels and Conference Centres in Vienna

The Austrian capital is a hub for business and finance, and as a result there are a number of conference centres and business hotels in the city. The majority are found in Innere Stadt, Leopoldstadt and Donaustadt. You’ll also find accommodation near to the city’s international airport, on the southeastern outskirts of Vienna.

Don’t forget that Vienna is an excellent city for both regular hotels and apartment-style accommodation. If you’re going to be in the city for a long period, then having your own private apartment, complete with kitchen and living facilities, could be just the ticket.

Family-Friendly Hotels in Vienna

Though a business centre, Vienna is also a fantastic holiday destination for families. Stay in the district of Hietzing and you can enjoy easy access to attractions like the Lainzer Tiergarten, a vast wildlife reserve, the Schonbrunn Zoo, and the beautiful 18th-century Schonbrunn Palace. Plenty of affordable family hotels can be found in this region of the city. From Hietzing subway station, the Innere Stadt can be reached in just 15 minutes.

Other family-friendly areas of the city include Neubau. This area boasts excellent shopping and the fantastic Museums Quartier, and the Innere Stadt itself. Here you’ll find Vienna’s Imperial Butterfly House and a good selection of affordable three and four-star hotels.

Wherever you decide to stay in Vienna, and whoever you’re travelling with, you can make your trip special by tailoring it your needs, interests and budget. With so many fantastic hotels to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
