Pocket Guide: Montego Bay

Montego Bay is a popular Jamaican resort on the north shore of the island. It’s a tale of two cities – one side a polished Caribbean resort filled with five-star hotels and white beaches, and the other a gritty Caribbean town, where you can experience the real Jamaica.

Where to Stay in Montego Bay

Montego Bay is where you’ll find the majority of the island’s all-inclusive resorts and luxury hotels, as well as many beachside bars, restaurants and stunning white sand beaches.

At the heart of Montego Bay is the Hip Strip, better known as Gloucester Avenue, a lively stretch, home to many mid-range hotels, as well as traditional Jamaican restaurants, where you can sample everything from goat curry to rice and peas and jerk chicken.

What to See and Do in Montego Bay

Just across from Gloucester Avenue lies the famous Doctor’s Cave Beach with its exclusive private beach club with gift shops, a cyber cafe, beach bars and changing rooms. One of the most picturesque beaches in the area, Doctor’s Cave Beach is known for its pristine water quality and excellent swimming spots.

Tourist Attractions around Montego Bay

It’s not only Montego Bay town that’s worth exploring. Just off shore lies the Montego Bay Marine Park, a protected area home to 82 species of marine life and 41 different types of coral.

Get to the park from any of Montego Bay’s beaches and explore its wildlife on a snorkelling or diving excursion, by renting a kayak or enjoying a glass-bottom boat tour.

If you’re into history, architecture or golf, Montego Bay has you covered. Take time to visit to Rose Hall Great House, 20 minutes outside of town. On your tour of the historic property, you’ll learn about its murderous myths and legends. And if you’re feeling brave join the candle-lit night tour and just hop you don’t see the White Witch of Rose Hall on your way round.

For a less hair-raising afternoon, head to one of Montego Bay’s two championship golf courses for a round or to practice your swing.
