Pocket Guide: Kenilworth

Dating back to at least the Norman era, Kenilworth is best known for its large ruined castle, which is one of Warwickshire's leading tourist attractions. The town also has good transport links to Coventry and Birmingham via the local motorway network, and is an ideal base to explore the county's other points of interest. Kenilworth is also very close to the prestigious University of Warwick, which has been regularly ranked as one of Britain's top ten universities.

Kenilworth Castle

The castle, which dates back to the early 12th Century, was at the centre of a major siege in the following century and played an instrumental role in the Wars of the Roses, when Edward II was held here at the Henry of Lancaster's fortress. The landmark was later transformed into a much more majestic Elizabethan palace with an intricately decorated Great Hall, and now overlooks a beautifully landscaped Elizabethan Garden.

Whether you're looking for a luxury hotel with immaculate rooms or value-for-money accommodation for a short stay, there is plenty to choose from in the town, from the delightful Ferndale House to the very affordable Holiday Inn Kenilworth.

Stoneleigh Abbey

Another sight that's definitely worth visiting if you're a history lover is Stoneleigh Abbey, which was founded by monks in the 12th Century and became a country mansion in later years. For more than 400 years, it was the residence of the wealthy Leigh family, although it's now the home of a popular riding school and is regularly open to the public. It's just a short drive from Honiley Court Hotel, another iconic landmark that dates back to the 16th Century and provides luxury accommodation with free WiFi, free parking and excellent business facilities with premium conference rooms.

A Little Further Afield

All hotels in Kenilworth are within easy reach of the attractive market town of Warwick, which is best known for its enormous Norman castle, 11th century Collegiate Church of St. Mary, and quaint medieval streets and historic inns. Kenilworth is also a short drive from the picturesque town of Royal Leamington Spa, which is famed for its Regency architecture and Royal Pump Rooms.
