Renowned for its large Norman castle, Warwick is a pretty market town benefiting from excellent public transport links to Birmingham and London, as well as a great selection of both luxury and budget hotels to suit all pockets.
A permanently inhabited settlement since Saxon times, Warwick became a strategic defence location for the Normans following the construction of the castle, soon after the successful invasion of William the Conqueror in 1066. Despite a major fire in the late 17th Century, the town was extensively rebuilt with many fine 18th and 19th Century landmarks, although numerous other medieval buildings still survive today, many of which now welcome guests and provide excellent accommodation options.
The castle is noted for its special gatehouse, which is dominated by a 45-metre tower and features a two-fold battlement system. It's now one of the most visited attractions in Britain, and has many attractive state rooms and surprisingly lifelike waxworks of its previous residents.
Next to the marketplace, this iconic collegiate church is as grand as a cathedral and is nearly 900 years old, although much of it was redesigned in the Perpendicular architectural Gothic style in the 14th Century. If you're looking for refined, value-for-money accommodation nearby, then you could choose the Falstaff Hotel, which offers sophisticated accommodation, free parking and free WiFi access.
This pleasant private garden is between the castle and the River Avon, offering superb views and plenty of diverse plant life. Nearby is the Tachbrook Mallory House, a popular three star establishment that provides free WiFi and elegantly decorated rooms.
Spend some time at the historic Royal Pump Rooms in neighbouring Royal Leamington Spa, and learn about the growth of the town from an unknown country village into a prestigious Spa resort for the wealthy. Warwick is also within easy reach of the splendid Charlecote Park, which dates back more than 400 years and is next to a vast deer park. The mansion is only a short drive from the Ashorne Hill Conference Centre, which provides ample business amenities for corporate guests, and immaculate rooms and free WiFi in public areas.
