Pocket Guide: Bristol Castle Park Hotels

An area of human activity since Saxon times, Bristol Castle Park is one of Bristol's most popular public spaces, originally dominated by a grand castle built soon after the invasion of William the Conqueror in the 11th Century. It's close to a good selection of hotels, from high-end four star establishments to value-for-money guesthouses.

About the Old Bristol Castle

Although you can still observe some fragments of this structure at Bristol Castle Park, the building was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell's command during the English Civil War in the 17th Century. Fortunately, the castle moat, covered in the early Victorian period, is still used for boating, and is overlooked by the remains of St. Peter's Church and St. Mary-le-Port Church, both of which were damaged during the Bristol Blitz.

More About St. Peter's Church and St. Mary-Le-Port Church

Dating back to at least the 12th Century, St. Peter's Church is now an important Second World War memorial site and was adjacent to St. Peter's Hospital, originally the Mint Workhouse. St. Mary le Port Church has existed since the Saxon era, when this area was already home to a pottery industry, and was expanded later in the Middle Ages.
