Pocket Guide: Leiden

Leiden has the second oldest city centre in the Netherlands and has an impressive canal system that is 6.5km long – great for exploring by boat.

Leiden’s city centre

You’ll find most of Leiden’s hotels in the city centre, ranging from two star budget hotels to four star luxury hotels. This is the best place to stay for convenience; regardless of where you stay in the centre, you will always be close to all the top attractions.

The historic centre of the centuries-old Leiden is fantastic to explore. Atop the man-made hill there’s a stronghold that has been kept in pristine condition throughout the years and is a very popular tourist attraction.

Other popular landmarks are the Pieterskerk, the biggest church in the city; the Rijksmuseum Volkenkunde; and the Natural History Museum.

The city centre is beautiful, with its many canals, 35 courtyards, 88 bridges and around 1250 national monuments.

Besides everything that there is to see, there is also a lot to do. Shop in the Doezastraat or the city’s most popular shopping street, Haarlemmerstraat.

West (Near Valkenburgse Meer)

Want to get away fro,m the hustle and bustle of the city centre? Then look for accommodation just to the west of Leiden or book a hotel close to the recreational area Valkenburgse Meer.
