History of Leiderdorp
Located in the megalopolis of the Netherlands, you can find Leiderdorp. This small village has a history that travels back centuries ago. Leiderdorp’s history begins in the Roman Empire and mentions everything from the Middle Ages to the Spanish Siege to the French Revolution and the Second World War. During these periods, Leiderdorp had many different important and noteworthy buildings of which most haven’t survived time. The monastery Engelendael, for example, was built in the 14th century and was an important building to Leiderdorp at the time. Engelendael survived the Spanish Siege that ended in 1574. However, the monastery was given away as a compensation for the debt the Prince of Orange had. The receiver decided to break down Engelendael and use this money for different purposes. In Leiderdorp, many of the historic buildings have these interesting stories. Unfortunately, not all buildings survived. However, the stories remain and are left to be explored in Leiderdorps Museum.
Leiderdorp and Leiden
Leiderdorp and Leiden share a part of their history. Both cities got their name thanks to the name of the districts back in the 10th century: Leithon. Nowadays, Leiden and Leiderdorp have literally grown towards each other with only Zijl and Oude Rijn rivers between them. When staying in Leiderdorp, it is very easy to visit the city Leiden for that reason. Leiden is a bigger city with a welcoming and cosy city centre. It offers enough stores to go on a shopping trip but it also has a cinema, theatre, cafes and several other things you can do on a night out. For both kids and adults, Leiden offers a variety of museums and tours that can entertain you for hours. Naturalis Biodiversity Center and Corpus Museum are both examples of (human) biology museums fun for any age. There’s also a big railway station that gives you easy access to other big cities in the Netherlands. From Leiden, it is only a 40-minute train ride from the capital Amsterdam. Endless possibilities to discover more of this country!
