The sunniest place in Britain, with an average of around 2,000 hours of sunshine each year, Jersey is just 14 miles from France. It is renowned for its breath-taking sandy coves and delicious seafood, and is abundant in exotic plant species that are difficult to find anywhere else in Britain. From enchanting, luxury waterfront hotels to value-for-money self-catering accommodation, you can choose from an excellent range of hotels in Jersey.
A settlement since Roman times, St. Helier is the capital of Jersey and became an important monastic centre by the medieval period. It became increasingly affluent by the 19th Century, when it began selling much of its fresh produce to businesses in Paris and London, and many charming holiday residences were built across the town. As you might expect, St. Helier is an ideal base for exploring the island, with plenty of elegant hotels catering for different budgets.
See Jersey's 16th-century Elizabeth Castle, which was once a strategic military defence and became a visitor attraction by the 20th Century. Learn more about the history of the island by visiting the Jersey Heritage museum, then explore Mont Orgueil, another fascinating castle that has guarded the island for well over than 700 years. You could also take the family to the Durrell Wildlife Park, which is just a short drive away and protects dozens of endangered and rare species ranging from ring-tailed lemurs to giant tortoises.
Approximately five miles long, St. Ouen's Bay is one of Jersey's finest sandy beaches. It is especially popular with surfers, and is the perfect place to witness the sunset at any time of the year. The vast bay is next to the Les Mielles Nature Reserve, which is home to the Lacerta bilineata green lizard and is overlooked by several Martello towers built during the Napoleonic Wars.
Jersey is blessed with many other fantastic sandy beaches, some of the most accessible of which include St. Brelade's Bay, the island's premier resort beach, and unspoilt south-facing Portlete Bay, which can be accessed via cliff steps. Some Jersey hotels also offer premium rooms with sea views for that extra romantic touch, and many are within walking distance or just a short drive from the coast.
See charismatic Samarès Manor, a medieval manor house with beautiful landscaped gardens that are open to the public from spring to autumn. Spend some time at La Motte, a magnificent tidal island that has been inhabited since the Neolithic era and features a pristine sandy beach. See the striking Neolithic tomb of La Hougue Bie, or see the Parish Church of St. Helier that was probably established before the Norman Invasion.
Almost all hotels on the island provide in-room WiFi access, often free of charge, so you can always stay up-to-date with your e-mails and keep in contact with family and friends. Easily make restaurant reservations online, check your ferry or flight times, and share you latest holiday photos and experiences via social media.
