Breakfast was excellent and service was attentive. This is a small village hotel not a chain. James IV regularly made the journey to Whitekirk, but his son James V gave the site to the Sinclair family who in around 1540 built a rare example in Scotland of a 3-storey tithe barn with stone from the former pilgrims' hostel. I mentioned to the staff that it was not Eggs Royale, but again I left it, as they did not seem to know how to deal with the issue. We had also booked a table on Friday night and could not understand why there were two different dining rooms — one with tablecloths and one plain. When I made the booking, I believed we would be seated in the main restaurant, as there was nothing on the website explaining the difference. Otherwise, the food on Friday night was good and the bedroom was lovely. However, we travel frequently in Scotland and, unfortunately, I will not be returning.
