Pocket Guide: Hexham

The market town of Hexham in Northumberland lies just six miles to the South of Hadrian's Wall. With its winding cobbled streets, medieval abbey and quirky boutiques, it's a tourist haven throughout the year. It's just 20 miles to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, making the town a popular destination for couples, families and groups of friends. You'll find accommodation including guesthouses, B&Bs and independent hotels here, all within easy walking distance of the town's attractions.

Hotels for Families in Hexham

Whether you prefer to stay in a B&B or an independent hotel, you'll find value-for-money accommodation in Hexham. Most establishments offer a complimentary breakfast and are happy to provide infant beds or cribs free of charge, on request. You'll also find that many hotels allow pets to stay, so you can bring your four-legged friend along to enjoy some of the beautiful beaches and walking routes in the area. Although the majority of guesthouses and B&Bs provide free parking, it's unlikely you'll need the car if you're spending most of your time in the town centre, which is fairly compact.

Days Out in Hexham

There's plenty to see and do here, so after breakfast at your hotel, why not head for Hadrian's Wall, where you can enjoy some great views over Berwick-upon-Tweed and the surrounding area? Hexham Abbey is well worth visiting, or explore Hexham's Old Gaol. Built in 1333, it was the first purpose-built prison in the United Kingdom. For something a little more glamorous, get dressed up for a day at the races at Hexham Racecourse, Northumberland's only racecourse, or spend your afternoons shopping at the local markets. Every Tuesday and Saturday, there are stalls in the Market Place, whilst the farmers market on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month is the best place to pick up delicious local produce.

Amenities for Work and Play at Hexham Hotels

Whether you're enjoying a short break in Hexham or travelling here for an event at Hexham Racecourse, you'll find a range of high-quality accommodation offering excellent amenities. Most hotels and guesthouses provide free WiFi, while larger hotels have conference rooms or meeting facilities where you can catch up on work or meet with clients. Guest room amenities such as flat-screen TVs and DVD players keep the kids busy on rainy days too.
