So close to hadrians wall and is a historic venue itself.
The service, the food and the room were perfect. It was one of the best short breaks I and my wife have ever had. A huge thankyou from us both Tom & Lydia.
The couple who runs the place is very friendly and helpful. You will feel adopted by this adorable British family and their friendly black lab! Our room was spacious. The beds were comfy. The bathroom was alright, even by American standards. Breakfast was delicious with a lot of options. We were ...
We were so thrilled to arrive at this oasis of comfort, food and drink after a very challenging 15 mile day of ups and downs on the Hadrian's Wall Walk. We were very grateful that the staff let us place our order for dinner and order packed lunches for the next day as the kitchen was closing soon ...
We are a family of four with two young children and the family room was perfect for our stay, with a wonderful view of the river from the window. The owner was extremely helpful, even offering use of their washing machine when we needed it! Would highly recommend this B&B.
Housesteads Roman Fort is the most complete Roman Fort in Britain, located at Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland. Vercovicium, to give the fort its Latin name (it means Place of Effective Fighters, by the way) was built at roughly the same time as the wall in around 122 AD. Remarkably, much of its structure still survives to this day, including the barrack blocks, hospital and some rather old toilets - thankfully long out of order! Housesteads Roman Fort is a must see if you're planning a visit to Hadrian's Wall and is easily reached from some great Northumberland hotels and guesthouses, many of which are located in the nearby market town of Hexham.
Housesteads Roman Fort is much more than a set of ancient ruins and under the curatorship of the National Trust and English Heritage, Roman history at the site comes alive with a range of family-friendly activities, special events, and museum exhibits. Enjoy an informative tour of the fort and learn about the life of a Roman 2000 years ago in the best way possible: by getting involved and getting your hands on some authentic Roman artefacts. As the site is managed by the National Trust, it boasts an excellent visitor centre where you can enjoy a snack, a hot drink, and a well-deserved break.
Housesteads Roman Fort is located in easy reach of some quaint villages, including Bardon Mill, as well as the market town of Hexham, where you can catch the AD122 (at the tourist office) which takes you along Hadrian's Wall. Hexham is served by Hexham railway station and the fort has a fee-paying car park. Other facilities at Housesteads Roman Fort include a shop, picnic area, and toilets - and we're not talking about the old ones at the fort!
As the region is very popular with tourists, you'll find plenty of quality guesthouses and hotels located in the vicinity, including Gibbs Hill Farm Bed & Breakfast situated in nearby Bardon Mill and the Old Repeater Station, located along Military Road. Many more hotels and guesthouses are found in Hexham itself, including the three-star Best Western Beaumont Hotel.
