The Daimler AG Headquarters, Stuttgart
With the grandfather-clock engine of 1885, designed by Gottlieb Daimler and his partner Wilhelm Maybach, the age of the petrol engine was born. The first Daimler-Maybach automobile followed in 1889, in 1892 the Daimler Motor Company sold its first vehicle, and by the dawn of a new century, Stuttgart was on its way to becoming a global automotive and engineering powerhouse. Today, Daimler is the thirteenth-largest car manufacturer and second-largest truck manufacturer in the world – in 2014 it sold 2.5 million vehicles - and it incorporates the brands Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Smart.
Automotive Heaven Beside the River
The gleaming Daimler AG Headquarters occupy pride of place in the Neckarpark district just across the Neckar river from the city centre. Neckarpark is a true petrolhead paradise, boasting the headquarters and production facilities of both Daimler AG and its associated Mercedes-Benz marque, not to mention the Mercedes-Benz Museum and Mercedes-Benz Arena. Visitors strolling along the Neckar might note that the motorboat was born here, too, as the young Daimler and Maybach sought out every possible transport application for their fledgling petrol engine, and tested their motor launch here on the river.
To experience the rich history of the Daimler brand at first hand, simply stroll along the Mercedesstraße to the Mercedes-Benz Museum, of which Daimler is an integral part. A time capsule lift carries you up to the story’s horse-drawn beginnings, and you descend through a century and more of innovation and iconic design, with the Daimler name prominent throughout. Visitors should also check the event calendar at the Mercedes-Benz Arena (and shhh, dare we mention the Porsche Arena next to the Neckarpark subway station?).
