"Amazing place to stay!"
The only reason I am not rating this place as Excellent is that no higher rating available! Stunningly beautiful place in an amazing area! Only 15 minutes to the closest town with unexpected international dining options .... Or only 3.50 gbp taxi fare. Amazing Staff attended to every possible need plus a few more weeks never thought of. This hotel should be boitcamp for all hotels!

We had a great time. Very relaxing, friendly staff. The only negative: we were asked if we wanted to take our drinks to our room at 10:15pm. We felt a little rushed!

"Lovely hotel in the centre of everything "
Amazing hotel with the most helpful of staff! Food is impeccable along with the service. Only let downs were that the double bed in the room was 2 singles pushed together and the spa is a lot smaller than anticipated. But everything else was amazing and would defiantly return!

"Nice hotel, away from the tourist area."
Great hotel in an idyllic location. The bedroom was large and comfortable (King size room) and the food was very tasty with a good and varied selection. I suggest to the manager that he needs to employ morer staff as the 2 girls that seemed to be doing everything, checking in, serving in the bar and waiting in the restaurant, were way to busy and were working extremely hard. They were very pleasant in spite of being busy but we had to wait a little while between courses and then getting an extra drink after the meal. A great hotel and we would definately use again when we next visit the lakes.

"Great location , grand and luxurious hotel."
Great. Brilliant location (right on the lake and 100 Mtrs from town center). This is an old but grand hotel. Rooms were immaculate and well equipped. We had breakfast included which was buffet continental and a full English made to order. Prices were £14 for continental and £21 for cooked breakfast I think. Definitely over priced as we're bar drinks. Pint of Amstel £5.40!!! Staff were faultless and very helpful . Valet parking was a rip off, £20 per night and it wasn't even in the hotel , it was in an open site car park about 100 meters away. There is a public car park about 300 yards away ,this is £7 a day so better value .

"Fantastic location and views"
Booked as a surprise as I knew my girlfriend would love it - and she did! Superb location, overlooking the lake, and the main lounges, restaurant area, garden etc. were exceptional. Really warm welcome from Monty when we arrived, he was helpful with some local info too. We had a Garden View room which was perhaps a little small given the price, though still fine for us. The only real downside was that that part of the hotel (all garden rooms in one 'wing' it seems) seemed to be quite noisy in the morning and I couldn't quite work out why! Didn't spoil anything for us though and would be happy to return, though perhaps would look to book one of the rooms on the other side of the hotel, both in terms of being a little quieter and a little bigger.

Pocket Guide: Romantic Hotels in Cumbria

With acres of idyllic countryside and numerous charming and picturesque villages, Cumbria is easily one of England's most romantic counties. Highlights include the historic city of Carlisle and the long stretch of coastline, but the main event is undoubtedly the Lake District, which covers almost 3,000 square kilometres of the county. As it's such a popular holiday destination, Cumbria is home to some spectacular hotels, many of which are perfect for romantic getaways.

    Sunsets on the West Coast

Travelling couples are often drawn to the Cumbrian coastline. Being right at the edge of the county has a unique feeling about it, and there's always ample opportunity for a lengthy walk. One of the real charms of Cumbria's long coastline, though, are the sunsets. Looking out to the west, visitors can watch the sun go down over the ocean. As you'd expect, the coast is peppered with fine bars and restaurants, particularly in the popular seaside resorts such as Seascale.

Bailey Ground Lodge gives guests direct access to the beach. The 3-star hotel also offers free WiFi, which makes it easy for couples to plan excursions inland, to explore the famous Lake District.

    Romantic Spa Breaks

There's something incredibly romantic about stealing away with a loved one to a tranquil, rural location in search of nothing but total relaxation. That's precisely the kind of holiday had by thousands of couples in the UK each year when they set off for Cumbria.

There's no shortage of spa hotels in Cumbria, providing a whole host of relaxing treatment and therapies, often set in stunning grounds and elegant, period properties.

One of the county's most popular spa hotels is The Wordsworth Hotel, which is located in Ambleside, not far from Lake Grasmere. The hotel houses an organic spa, ideal for chilling out as a pair. There are also plenty of pretty walks nearby.

    Historic Carlisle

Fans of history will be drawn into the historic city of Carlisle. The castle and cathedral are obvious highlights, while Hadrian's Wall is just half an hour's drive away. Coupled will rejoice at the plethora of exquisite restaurants in town and the number of welcoming B&Bs near the city centre.
