Christchurch Harbour is a fascinating attraction deep in the heart of Dorset. One of only a handful of natural harbours in the United Kingdom, it opens up other possibilities for your downtime rather than just simple sightseeing. You'll find that there's a good range of accommodation close to the harbour, from boutique B&Bs and guesthouses through to mid-range hotels and high-end, upmarket establishments.
The natural harbour was formed over 7,000 years ago during the Ice Age. As the sea level rose, it flooded the wetlands close to the shore and Christchurch Harbour was created. There is still evidence of the early settlers who were drawn to the area; many of the ironstone boulders that were prized by Iron Age Man are still to be found near the remains of a settlement at Hengistbury Head. Thankfully, accommodation is a far cry from those early village huts! B&Bs in the area make an ideal base for families who want to explore the area but are watching their budget. The Beachside B&B offers an excellent standard of accommodation, with the added bonus of superb views across the harbour.
If you're looking to add something a little different to your time away, Christchurch Harbour has plenty offer. Although the harbour is quite shallow, there's plenty of opportunity to get to grips with it. Sailing and board-sailing are two very popular activities, with a good number of training and hire facilities; ideal for absolute beginners and seasoned sea-dogs alike. Fishing is another popular pastime, throwing some serenity into the mix, combined with the thrill of landing that big catch.
Those who want to make the most of an extended stay near Christchurch Harbour can investigate some of the nearby hotels. Those, such as the Strand Hotel and the Village Hotel Bournemouth are excellent mid-range choices for those who want all the comfort and quality of a hotel but without the associated costs of a luxury establishment. However, for those who want to relax in sumptuous surroundings, accommodation such as the Waters Reach Guest House and the Wyvern Hotel offer understated class and all those little extras that make stay something special.
