The Berwick-upon-Tweed Barracks and Main Guard were built in the early-18th Century, to protect against the Jacobite risings. One of the first purpose-built barracks in the country, today they're a popular family attraction. It's just a short walk to the centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed, where you'll find a range of B&Bs, independent hotels and country house hotels to choose from.
Accommodation in Berwick-upon-Tweed is small and cosy, ideal for families enjoying a short break or couples on a romantic weekend away. The town is a great base for exploring the Northumbrian countryside, and you'll find country house hotels within easy walking distance of golf clubs and walking routes, as well as town centre B&Bs providing value-for-money family accommodation. Amenities on offer at most hotels include free WiFi and free self-parking, so there's no need to travel light!
Enjoy a day out at Berwick-upon-Tweed's Barracks and you can explore the 'By Beat of Drum' exhibition, check out Berwick Museum and Art Gallery or head for The King's Own Scottish Borderers Museum. There are plenty of picnic tables where you can have lunch, but we recommend leaving the car at your hotel, as there's no on-site parking (although there is a pay and display car park nearby). To soak up even more of the town's history, head for Berwick Town Hall, where you can tour the old courtroom and jail cells. Berwick is also home to some beautiful sheltered beaches where you can relax while the kids build sandcastles, or even try your hand at water sports.
Cosy B&Bs and family-run guesthouses in Berwick-upon-Tweed are the ideal choice for families looking for affordable accommodation. One of the main benefits of this type of accommodation is flexibility - the owners will often be happy to prepare picnic lunches, offer assistance with booking tours and tickets or provide cribs or infant beds on request, free of charge. You'll find many establishments welcome pets too, so nobody needs to be left behind on the family holiday. Amenities such as flat-screen TVs and free WiFi will help to keep kids of all ages happy.
