Pocket Guide: Arona

This small town is a great starting point for those wanting to visit some of Tenerife's most popular beaches.

Arona is a beautiful little town with exciting buildings that blends colonial and ancient, pre-Spanish architectural styles. Arona is great for those looking to get away the crowds, having escaped some of the ravages of Tenerife's tourism. Still, the city is close to several wonderful beaches. Visit Arona and take a peaceful walk through the city, enjoy the local cuisine and receive a warm welcome from the locals.

Top Tips for Your Stay in Arona

Visit the city's beautiful church dating from the 18th century: the Iglesia San Antonio Abad. Do not miss the painting of San Antonio Abad, which is more than 300 years old. San Antonio Abad also forms the centrepiece of Aaron's most lively festival, held each January in honour of the saint. During the week-long festival you can see local dances, a long procession that travels through the city and spectacular fireworks displays.

Just behind the church is the start of a hiking trail that leads up to the Rogue del Conde viewpoint. The walk takes about four hours to complete. The mountain peak is about a thousand meters above sea level and from here you have a great view of southern Tenerife and La Gomera.

Keep the Kids Happy

Nearby you’ll find Parque Las Aguilas, the botanical garden zoo that is home to more than 100 different species of animal – great for those travelling with children. In the 75,000 square meter zoo you can find orangutans and a rare white tiger, amongst others. The park also has an impressive collection of birds of prey, such as mighty eagles, fungi and condors.

Explore the lively seafront near Playa de Los Cristianos. This sandy beach is protected from strong winds and is perfect for a fun swim. Stay late in the evening to enjoy a dinner and drinks at one of the bars overlooking the beach. Arona is the perfect starting point for a visit to Playa de Las Vistas, another outstanding sandy beach where you can dive and snorkel in the crystal clear waters.

Arona is located in southern Tenerife. There are good connections to nearby Los Cristianos with regular buses running between.
