Pestana Royal is a very outdated hotel. If you are looking for clean modern look that is not the place for you. If you are looking for a place with high quality food that is not the right place. Food quality is very poor. It is a very mediocre place with clean rooms and very mediocre food.

We had an ocean view suite just gorgeous! The gym is small. Food isn’t great.

The resort is amazing, super clean. The buffets are excellent, tons of selections, staffs are very friendly. The room was spacious and perfect. We really enjoy are stay, and we will be back.

Lovely hotel with beautiful views of the sea from the room. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. The suite room is well designed with a balcony and partition doors to essentially create 2 separate bedrooms. The planting and landscaping all around the hotel is stunning. The hotel looks and feels much nicer in reality than it does in any of the pictures. The hotel is well placed as a base to explore other parts of Madeira and the free shuttle bus into Funchal is excellent and very welcome. It is nice to be situated so close to the beach but I would caution venturing onto it with young children. It is very hard to walk on with many large stones, rocks and pebbles. The ocean waves/ currents are especially strong and indeed myself and another were hurt quite badly just attempting to get into the water. If you turn left from the front of the hotel there is a seawater lido/ rock pools 5 minutes walk away which is a much safer alternative and very well priced. The only real negative of the hotel is the quality of the food offered. Although plentiful it is not the best. Most meat offered was predominantly fat and gristle and the standard drink selection is poor. The barbecued fish however was incredible. Cleanliness in the rooms was great but some of the communal areas were not. We did spot several cockroaches during our stay. Overall we had a great holiday and (although not the height of luxury) enjoyed the hotel and found it excellent value for money.

This location was beautiful. Staff amazing! Breakfast buffet the best, I’ve ever had. The lobby and surrounding grounds amazing. Great room! Highly recommend.

We really enjoyed staying at this hotel - quiet peaceful setting in beautiful gardens. Would definitely return.
