A beautiful island in the middle of the Atlantic, Madeira offers great weather, fantastic walking routes and a fascinating culture. With cheap flights to Madeira available from a number of UK airports, exploring this unique island has never been easier.
Although summer is the peak season in Madeira, the sub-tropical island enjoys warm weather and plenty of sunshine throughout the year. From May to August, you’re almost guaranteed clear skies and toasty temperatures: if you’re after a bit of summer sun, this could be the best time to go.
In the spring and autumn months, the island is a lot quieter and flights to Madeira can be more affordable.
Winter in Madeira can be a little up and down with heavy downpours common from November to March. However, if you can put up with a little rain the low winter season can be very affordable – and you’re guaranteed to have much of the island to yourself.

Named after the island’s most famous son, Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport is located around eight miles east of Funchal, Madeira’s capital. Once infamous for its short runway and mountainous setting, the airport underwent extensive improvements, including, in 2000, having its runway extended to safely accommodate large commercial airliners.
Today, a good choice of flights connect the airport with destinations across Europe and further afield with several daily services direct to the UK.
Once your Madeira flight touches down, you can continue your journey by shuttle, bus or taxi.

Madeira has a reasonably good bus network with services running frequently and on time. Buses link most of the main tourist areas with Funchal as well as other major towns on the island.
Taxis are also available across Madeira or you can rent a vehicle and explore the island in your own time.
Many of the hotels on Madeira offer excursions and shuttles to the main sights and attractions.
In Funchal and other towns and villages, walking is the best way to get around or you can hire a bike and see the island from the saddle.
One of Madeira’s most famous landmarks is Pico Ruivo. Standing at the island’s highest point, it affords fantastic views over the surrounding area. The only way to reach the top is to walk. The route should take around one and half hours, more if you stop to take photos of the beautiful scenery.
No trip to Madeira would be complete without a stop in Funchal. Stroll around the city’s historic centre, enjoy a glass of wine at one of its many cafes and hunt for souvenirs in one of the arts and crafts shops that line the streets.
Once you’ve had your fill of Funchal, head up to Madeira Botanical Garden located just above the city. After exploring the flora and fauna on display, you can enjoy an adrenaline pumping ride back to town in a traditional wicker toboggan.
British passport holders don’t need a visa to travel to Madeira. Madeira is in the same time zone as the UK.
