Pocket Guide: Warrington

There are strong historic associations right across the county, with Warrington for instance seeing Oliver Cromwell's army based here during the English Civil War. Stay at a good Cheshire hotel or guesthouse, of which there are many, in the region and see some really exciting and interesting things that the whole family will enjoy.

Warrington's Attractions

Warrington is just 16 miles from Liverpool and has excellent road and rail connections close to the M56, M6 and M62 as well as the Manchester Ship Canal. The town began life, as so many other towns and cities across England, with the Romans, when they built a crossing settlement for the Mersey. It was a great place for a market, too, and the town continued to flourish, as you'll see today when you book in to a Cheshire hotel or B&B here. You can see evidence of later influences in the dents of the local parish church, which were apparently caused by cannon fire during the Civil War. The Cottage Restaurant is where Oliver Cromwell directed operations during some of this period, and the Battle of Warrington in 1651 was a notable Royalist victory.

Warrington really picked up as a centre for industry when the Mersey finally became navigable in the 18th Century. During the Industrial Revolution it was a centre for steel, textiles, brewing, tanning and chemicals, and much of its heritage from this time can still be seen. Today, the Warrington Museum and Art Gallery is well worth a visit, as are the nearby Gulliver's World and Apple Jack's Theme Parks, which are perfect destinations for family days out from your Cheshire hotel.

Cheshire is full of idyllic little market towns and interesting cities like Chester and Birkenhead, set in landscapes of rolling farmland and close to many sites of regional interest such as the Peak District and Merseyside, with the majestic North Wales Hills just to the south. The varied landscapes and attractive, historic towns make this a great place to come for any kind of holiday, whether you're interested in seeing Gulliver's World Theme Park or Chester Cathedral.
