One of the Costa del Sol’s original resorts, Torremolinos has long been among the region’s most popular draws. Located around 11 kilometres south of Málaga and just north of Benalmadena, Torremolinos attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. It’s not hard to see why – from wind- and kite-surfing to golf and shopping, this bustling resort offers an enviably diverse range of attractions to entertain visitors of all ages. As with many of the resorts on the Costa del Sol, the focal point of Torremolinos is the beach, but the fun doesn’t stop when you move inland. Whether it’s a family trip to the aquarium or zoo, traditional cuisine in a charming taverna or craft beer and cocktails at a late-night bar, you’ll never be short of something to do. Throw in an historic old town, a celebrated gay scene and plenty of high-class hotels, and you’ve got the secret recipe to Torremolinos’ enduring reputation as Spain’s hottest holiday hotspot.
The Torremolinos coast is divided into 4 main beaches: Playa El Bajondillo, Playa La Carihuela, Playamar beach and Playa Los Alamos. The majority of the hotels Torremolinos has to offer are located on or close to these beaches, a prime example being the 3-star Hotel Tarik.
The most central of the beaches is Playa El Bajondillo, which can be accessed from the old town via a sweeping staircase that descends from Calle San Miguel. If you book one of the many Torremolinos hotels in this area, you’ll be close to the beach, the historic centre of the resort and many of the destination’s best restaurants. A fabulous choice is the 4-star Melia Costa Del Sol hotel, located just a stone’s throw from the sand.
Another of the most popular beaches in Torremolinos is Playa La Carihuela. Located on the other side of a rocky headland separating it from Playa El Bajondillo, it’s within walking distance of the old town and Torremolinos’ many amenities. Booking a hotel near Torremolinos’ Playa La Carihuela or the resort’s old town brings the nightlife to your doorstep and opens up the neighbouring resort of Benalmadena.
If you’re looking for a quieter stay, or if you want to be close to the region’s main airport, hotels close to Playa Los Alamos are where it’s at. The most easterly of the resort’s stretches of sand, this secluded spot is the region’s most unspoilt beach and a particular favourite among the locals.
Torremolinos is famous as a package-holiday destination, so it’s no surprise that most of the hotels in the resort cater to large groups, families and holidaymakers looking for sun, sea and relaxation. This means that most boast a large number of well-appointed rooms, a range of convenient facilities and handy locations close to the resort’s sandy beaches.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly hotel, Torremolinos has a good selection of beachside offerings to choose from. Many of the big waterfront hotels come complete with swimming pools, gyms and spa facilities. Some have kids’ clubs to occupy little ones in the evening, and most have on-site bars and restaurants where parents can relax after a lazy day of sunbathing.
Although many of the hotels in Torremolinos are geared towards package holidays, there are also a number of reasonably priced, no-frills options, as well as self-catering apartments, cottages and guesthouses available. The majority of these establishments are also located close to the water, with most found just a short walk from the centre.
Torremolinos’ main attraction is its Mediterranean coastline, so most of the town’s chief activities revolve around the sea. Kite- and wind-surfing are sure to set pulses racing, while dolphin-watching from the shore, or on a boat, are perfect for family outings. Away from the coast, Torremolinos has a number of purpose-built attractions to explore. You could spend a day having fun at nearby Aqualand, visit the resort’s crocodile park, play a round of golf at one of the area’s many courses, or while away the hours in Torremolinos’ picturesque old town.
In the evenings, as the sun sets above the glistening waves, what could be better than pulling up a chair at a seaside restaurant in La Carihuela or discovering Torremolinos’ vibrant nightlife?
