Pocket Guide: Hotels in Fuengirola

Visiting Fuengirola

Once just a small fishing village, Fuengirola has grown to become one of the most popular tourist resorts on the Costa del Sol. Cosmopolitan, and with a famously raucous nightlife scene, this Andalucian town has over five miles of attractive Blue Flag beaches, so that you can always find a patch of golden sand even during peak season.

Conveniently reached by road, rail and bus, Fuengirola lies equidistant from Malaga and Marbella, a 30-minute drive from each along the coast. Slightly nearer, Torremolinos is another lively beach resort. A favourite Costa del Sol location for families and groups, there are abundant Fuengirola beach hotels offering good value accommodation, excellent facilities and stunning views.

Beyond the beaches there are a number of interesting cultural attractions around Fuengirola and the surrounding area, including the medieval Moorish castle and Roman ruins, and numerous green spaces. Fuengirola hotels tend to be well placed so that you can get around quite easily on foot, although there is also a solid public transport infrastructure and plenty of free parking available if you arrange car rental in Fuengirola.

Where to stay in Fuengirola

Fuengirola’s long promenade is ideal for relaxing sunset strolls. If you want to be close enough to the seafront that you can easily take in the local atmosphere of an evening, or lay your towel down on the best stretch of sand every morning, then you’ll have no difficulty in finding a well-priced Fuengirola beach hotel that meets your requirements.

The town is renowned for its many buzzing bars, nightclubs and the wider Malaga area also has a growing reputation for upmarket tapas restaurants. Should you prefer to be in the midst of the party scene, then there are plenty of budget hotels in Fuengirola that are perfectly suited to nightowls.

Some Fuengirola hotels also have balcony rooms that offer superb views of Sohail Castle, from which it can be difficult to tear yourself away.

If you can’t find what you need in Fuengirola itself but still want to be nearby, then there are lots of hotels in Malaga, while you can also find great value beach hotels in Torremolinos. In the other direction, there is also a wide variety of Marbella hotels available whether you’re interested in a large swimming pool, childcare or evening entertainments. Stay in any of these resorts, and you can be in Fuengirola for sightseeing or a night out within half an hour.

Things to do in Fuengirola

One must-do when on holiday in Fuengirola is a visit to the ancient Sohail Castle. Originally constructed in the 10th century, this magnificent Moorish complex has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, but is now widely open for visitors. Concerts and other events are regularly held here in an open amphitheatre, with the medieval market during August being of particular note. There is also a small museum illuminating the castle’s interesting history.

Lying directly in front of the castle, El Ejido is among the most picturesque of Fuengirola’s seven beaches. Naturally, there is an immense range of watersports available in this beach resort, from parasailing and jetskiing to scuba diving and snorkelling. Many Fuengirola beach hotels will offer packages that include such activities, or be able to assist in booking them. Reserving a spot in advance is highly advisable if you’re planning a holiday in Fuengirola during peak season. Golf is also a popular activity here, and there are a number of well-regarded courses in the area. You can find a Fuengirola golf hotel that will allow you to tee off straight after breakfast.

Families visiting Fuengirola for quality time together will find much to love here. Besides the miles of sun-splashed beaches, there are play parks, a water park and also a large biopark to explore. The River Park, situated near Sohail Castle and the promenade, is an especially pleasant place to cool off on a warm day, with many landscaped areas, shaded gazebos, fountains and a jogging circuit.

History buffs can roam Roman ruins such as the Villa del Secretario and the Torreblanca thermal baths nearby. Fuengirola also hosts one of the largest weekly markets on this stretch of the coast, ideal if you have a self-catering villa in Fuengirola, or you’re on the hunt for souvenirs.

In the early evenings, locals and visitors alike will often congregate around the plaza, before dispersing to the promenade, the bars or back to their hotels. That’s not the case on the Night of San Juan in late June, however. At sunset on the summer solstice, crowds of people flock to the beach to celebrate the start of summer, with wild parties, bonfires and celebrations frequently going on until dawn.
