Thoroughly deserving its reputation as one of the United Kingdom's premier holiday destinations, the county of Wiltshire really does have it all. From mysterious prehistoric sites to lively high streets and rolling hills, Wiltshire offers something for every taste. Visitors in search of somewhere peaceful to take a break during their holiday could do no better than to visit Stanton County Park, near the centre of Swindon. There are plenty of bed and breakfasts and hotels near the park, making it an easy trip for visitors staying in Swindon.
Like many of Wiltshire's foremost attractions, Stanton Park has a fascinating and far-reaching history, with the 'Manor of Stantone' gaining a mention in the Domesday Book of the 11th Century. Many years later in 2000, the park was opened to public in its current form, as a country park and nature reserve.
Spread across 74 hectares of stunning countryside, the park offers a variety of habitats ranging from ponds and wetlands to more formal flower beds. Central to the Green Flag Award winning park is evidence of a Roman Villa dating back to around the year 200AD. As well as providing a gorgeous location for picnics and walks, Stanton County Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife and more than 900 species of fungi.
Amazingly, this tranquil space is not far from the very centre of busy Swindon. The town centre is home to a number of exciting attractions, including Swindon Art Gallery and The Swindon Museum. Probably leading the pack, though, is the Swindon Great Western Railway Museum, which details the area's industrial past and the pioneering achievements of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. As you'd expect, there are also plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to choose from.
As one of the most popular towns in the county, Swindon offers some of the best hotels in Wiltshire. The centre boasts a handful of well-known hotel brands, offering a convenient base from which to explore the county's many delights. Alternatively, Madison Hotel sits on the town's eastern edge, offering a good-sized restaurant and meeting facilities.
