The south-west of England is famous for its vast areas of breath-taking natural beauty. In this respect, the landlocked, rural county of Wiltshire is among the most dazzling in the country. Home to a host of prehistoric sites and lively attractions, Wiltshire makes an equally great holiday destination for travelling families and budding history buffs. Among the most popular attractions in Wiltshire is the Coate Water Country Park, a large area of natural beauty peppered with exciting things to see and do. To top it all off, the area is blessed with some excellent guesthouses, B&Bs and hotels.
Coate Water Country Park
Coate Water Country Park is named after its central feature, a large body of water known as Coate Reservoir. Since the early-20th Century, the pretty reservoir was used as a pleasure park, with a huge diving platform adding an element of fun and a chance to cool off on those hot summer days. Sometime in the 1930s, the wooden construction was replaced with a large, Art Deco-style concrete structure. Though the reservoir's no longer a popular swimming spot, this makes a dramatic centre point for the country park. The concrete structure has even been granted Grade II listed status.
Away from the water, the county park provides ample opportunity for picturesque walks, spotting wildlife and generally enjoying a relaxed family day out.
Facilities at the Coate Water Country Park are both plentiful and outstanding. Across the ranger centre, fun splash park and nature reserve, there really is something for everyone. There's a café, toilets and play area on the site, as well as good disabled access. BBQs can be hired for a reasonable fee, meaning families can stay for the entire day.
