I was having my bathroom remodeled and the management company put me up in the hotel for seven nights while they completed the work. Hotel Whitcomb is a nice historic hotel. No room service. Not in a great part of the city. Great access to public transportation. Walls are very thin. Room was large for San Francisco standards.
We were very impressed by the hotel itself, the staff's friendliness and helpfulness and the comfort of the room...the bedding is to die for. It's central to everything in the city too: the infamous mall is right next door, Market street is a block away and the we boarded the cable car right across the street to ride to the wharf. Would recommend the Pickwick to anyone!!
We chose to stay at a hotel instead of friends because we had bikes with us for a morning group ride. Staff was great, room was very large with plenty of room for the bikes, and the room was very clean. Location was great- a little quiet (read: businesses closed) on the weekend.
I chose this hotel because it was under the allowed amount by my company for a work-related trip. I loved the funky location and enjoyed walking around looking at the industrial buildings that have been made into condos and homes. The hotel itself reminded me of B & B's I have stayed at in London with squeaky, carpeted hallways and tine bathrooms. However the bathroom had been renovated and was clean. This was the best option I had for my limited budget but was south of Market and my work was north so it was a 25-min cab ride from work to the hotel and the same the next morning. Continental breakfast consisted of good coffee but no cream-only coffeemate and muffins.
Pocket Guide: San Francisco South of Market Hotels
Home to many tech startups, South of Market embodies San Francisco's inventive spirit. Stroll along the Embarcadero and take in panoramic views of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Catch a ballgame at AT&T Park, the jewel of a bustling neighborhood, Mission Bay. Art fans should check out the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. And there's plenty of shopping to be found along 5th and Market.
