Pocket Guide: Pickering

North Yorkshire is one of the country's most beloved tourist destinations. The largest county in England, North Yorkshire offers a wide array of natural landscapes and exciting attractions. Visitors can enjoy world-class walking routes, medieval towns and a stunning coastline. Among the county's most popular resorts is the ancient market town of Pickering, set in the east. The town's medieval streets are lined with welcoming businesses, including numerous excellent hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs.

Pickering Attractions

For a relatively small town, Pickering is home to an impressive number of attractions. With roots dating back as far as 270BC, many of the most interesting sights in Pickering are historical. Few are more fascinating than the Pickering Parish Church, which features several medieval wall paintings.

Pickering Castle is another must-visit attraction. The motte and bailey castle, now managed by English Heritage, dates back to the 11th Century and is in remarkably good shape. Originally built by the Normans, under William the Conqueror, the castle escaped relatively unscathed through some of the country's bloodiest periods of history.

Traditional Inns

Pickering’s rich history is palpable, casting a real atmosphere throughout the town. It's fitting, therefore, to look out for some traditional accommodation. Fortunately, Pickering houses some of the oldest and most beautiful hotels in North Yorkshire.

The White Swan Inn is a charming and traditional accommodation option, located in the Market Place, close to the centre of town. The family-friendly inn features free WiFi, a fine restaurant and even some business facilities.

A Space for Weddings

As such a picturesque and peaceful town, Pickering is a popular destination for weddings. Several of the town's hotels offer bespoke wedding packages, with the Best Western Forest and Vale Hotel really standing out.

The Best Western hotel is set within a stunning 200-year-old Georgian manor that's guaranteed to impress guests from the minute they arrive. The hotel boasts a large and private garden, which is a great spot for wedding photos. The on-site restaurant is the perfect setting for a large meal with all your friends and family. The hotel's catering team can help pick a menu that's right for you on your special day.
