4/5 Good

The room was clean but a little small and the decor basic. We overlooked the station but the windows were double glazed so only minimal train noise. For the price paid we feel we should have had a complimentary breakfast included. The facilities were good and we enjoyed using the swimming pool. The restaurant was good and evening meal competitively priced. The lounges were excellent. The bar was closed on the first night due to staff shortages and as we came back early expecting a drink, we we’re disappointed. There was only limited service on the second night. A good location close to all York’s amenities.

The staff were amazing, friendly and polite. The room however, aas not cleaned to a high standard, there were fingerprints on the mini fridge and crumbs underneath the fold out mirror in the table. No decaff teabags were available during our stay which seems odd as they are commonly available.

Hugely disappointed by this hotel. Had expected the room that was displayed when booking but clearly they don’t show the rooms from the Sidings as they are small, and unimpressive. They are also a long walk away from reception so it takes a while to leave the hotel. For the price, you’d be better to stay in a budget hotel because the rooms are the same and much less expensive. The hotel is grand but it also houses huge spider’s webs. There is also a smell in the Sidings, couldn’t stand the smell. And in the Garden Room, if you think you’ll be served with a smile forgot it. Everything felt like it was too much trouble. Save your money and stay elsewhere - I won’t be back.

Beautiful building, but the standard double room was very small. It felt quite claustrophobic, the room was no bigger than the double bed plus bedside tables. Given that we are still mid-pandemic and there are signs throughout the hotel boasting "Enhanced levels of cleaning", the room itself was low in cleanliness. Bathroom floor was very dirty. The shower drain was also clogged up with hair and soap scum, which we didn't realise until I took a shower and the water wasn't draining away. I had to turn the shower off so it didn't overflow and flood the bathroom, and only turn the shower back on to rinse soap and shampoo away. We then had to use a cup to take some of the water out and pour down the sink. My husband then used a spoon to wedge the shower drain open and cleaned the drain out himself. NOT what we expect to be doing for £232 a night! There was no air conditioning, which is totally understandable in a building of this age. But the fan provided in the room was the noisiest fan on earth! But the room was so small and hot that it was necessary. Either way we were kept awake by the noise of the fan, or by being too warm. Breakfast was great though, and the hotel is in a great location to access the city. In all honesty we wouldn't rush to re-visit this hotel. Whilst it really is a beautiful building, with a gorgeous lobby, the room just wasn't up to standard at all. We've stayed at cheaper hotels and have had a far higher standard of cleanliness.

A stunning hotel in a great location. The hotel was just perfect for a romantic getaway. The breakfast was sufficient, apart from there was little choice for vegetarians and vegans from the hot buffet and the dinner plates were very small. In my opinion the breakfast was not value for money. I am also of the opinion that parking should be free during your stay. We paid for a Junior Suite and complimentary parking should have been included in the room price. I would definitely recommend this hotel but not necessarily the breakfast if you are a vegetarian or vegan and wish to eat a full English type breakfast.
