Pocket Guide: Manchester Piccadilly Station Hotels

Manchester is one of England's great manufacturing cities. Ever since a group of Flemish weavers decided to make the city their home in the 15th Century, textile production here went from strength to strength. The late-18th Century saw it peak, with steam-driven looms providing cotton fabrics for half the world. The old industrial days may be long gone, but the spirit of those energetic times has never left the city. When you come here today and book in to a Manchester hotel or B&B, you'll have a world of heritage innovation to explore as well as a city that's thoroughly modern in every way. Manchester Piccadilly Station is itself an old survivor, opened in 1842 and still the city's main station, moving with the times as Manchester itself has done.

Manchester Piccadilly Station was known as London Road Station until 1960. It had retained that name since 1847 after originating as a temporary terminus on the M&BR line to Stockport in 1840. You can still see some of the old cast ironwork in the supporting struts for the roof when you visit the station from your Manchester hotel or guesthouse base in the city. It's a completely modern station now, of course, and popular as a destination in its own right, with smart cafés and eateries to relax in, and newsagents to browse around. From here, you can quickly reach destinations as diverse as London, Birmingham, South Wales, Newcastle, Sheffield and York, and international travellers have a fast link with nearby Manchester Airport.

Manchester Piccadilly's train shed roof is a listed structure which arches over the whole station, creating a wonderfully light space beneath for travellers and shoppers. It's supported by cast iron columns and masonry walls, and was originally covered with slates until these were replaced by 10,000 panes of reinforced glass in 1999. These appear to float above the trusses and create a novel and even inspiring effect as you look up on a sunny day. Be sure to come and experience it for yourself from your Manchester hotel while you're here.
