Pocket Guide: Glasgow

Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and one of the most entertaining and welcoming destinations in the UK. Once known for heavy industry, marine engineering and international trade, in the last few decades it has re-invented itself as a hub of arts and culture. And with some of the best UK shopping outside of London, don’t worry about coming home empty-handed.

Affectionately nicknamed ‘Dear Green Place’ by locals, Glasgow is characterized by attractive green spaces, stunning Victorian architecture and world-class galleries and museums. Great nights out are commonplace here as the city boasts an incredible live music scene built around legendary venues like King Tut’s in the city centre and Òran Mór on Byres Road.

Glasgow Must-Sees

Located in the city’s fashionable West End, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum on Argyll Street is one of Scotland’s most popular free attractions. Opened in 1901 the museum has 22 themed galleries, covering everything from Ancient Egypt to the Wild West. For a taste of Glasgow café society, keep an eye out for Ashton Lane when you are on this side of the city: a cobbled street full of trendy bars and restaurants just off Byres Road.

For hundreds of interactive exhibits that will delight kids and adults, head to Glasgow Science Centre in the Pacific Quay Area. This distinctive dome-shaped building is also home to an IMAX theatre and a magnificent planetarium. Looking for exquisite walks? On sunny days, travellers can wander through the Botanic Gardens on the Great Western Road. On less sunny days, stroll amongst palm trees and cacti and explore the city’s history in The People’s Palace & Winter Gardens.

Architectural Highlights

Glasgow has an impressive heritage of Victorian architecture, owing to the vast industrial wealth in the city during the 19th Century. The University of Glasgow, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and the Willow Tea Rooms by Charles Rennie Mackintosh are two fine examples. Indeed Mackintosh is much loved by the city and keen eyed travellers will spot his Art Nouveau style throughout the city.

Music & Events

Glasgow’s calendar is packed with entertaining events hosting local and international talent. For folk and world music fans, Celtic Connections Festival takes place each January. During July, Merchant City Festival turns the city into a giant theatre as music, art, comedy and drama take centre stage. Glasgow Winterfest and the city’s Hogmanay Celebration end the year with plenty of festive fireworks. There are concerts and live music in Glasgow all the time, check up to date listings to see what’s happening at the O2 Arena, SECC, Barrowland, King Tut’s and many more venues around the city.

Transport

Glasgow International Airport is 13km west of the city and a 25 minute journey from the city centre. The main train stations are Glasgow Central & Queen Street which are well connected to other parts of the UK. The city has a two line subway system with stops near major landmarks. All day ‘Discovery Tickets’ will allow you to navigate the city with ease.
