Nice room. Not too big, but good enough to sleep.conveniently located on top of a starbucks and a Tully's across the street. Bus stop infront of hotel and subway station one block away. Good location to see/dress up as Geisha.
The hotel provided exceptional service during our stay. The staff helped us book an appointment for kimono rental, as we didn't have access to a local phone during the day. All staff were fluent in English, which made it easier to communicate.
We decided to experience a traditional Japanese hotel or Ryokan. The Sakanoue was a terrific place to spend one or two nights. The staff is so nice but no one speaks English. The room rate includes a massive and delicious breakfast and a Japanese style dinner. If you like Japanese food, it would be wonderful for you.
We stayed here a few nights. We were unaware that the bathrooms were communal but secured an ensuite at least for a night. Typical modern tatame room. All clean. More like a hostel with family rooms. Nice relaxed and helpful staff. An ofuru bath, was rather small had to be booked and was non too hot.
The best thing was position. Very close to Kyomisudera etc and a stroll to the Gion and pontocho.
"Nice hotel, to taste an aspect of Japanese culture"
If you like to try a nice Japanese sleeping room, well this might be a choice, a bit expensive though. No Onesn is here. I lost some money that I left in the room, but safety boxes are available, so be aware. The reception is friendly and cooperative.

"Close to everything- really in the middle of Gion"
Quiet- yet steps away the bustle of tourists on one of the most popular streets in Gion. we got a large room with a huge bathroom/bath and shower area and the beds were comfortable. My only complaint was the AC leaked on the carpet (luckily, where we did not walk) and the room would get hot and stuffy in the mornings despite the AC being on. Not a big deal though- everything else was great.
This ryokan, in the heart of Giin, was an excellent one. The staff were all pleasant and polite, especially if you can speak some Japanese. The rooms were in excellent condition an, and while I personally wasn't able to eat their breakfast or dinner while I was there, they looked delicious. The internet they offered was respectable: not fast but not slow either. Finally, the sento they had on the first floor was excellent.
As for the traditional aesthetics, I think this ryokan did very well. All the staff were wearing very nice spring kimono, which were appropriate for the season. The rooms each had three ikebana: one under the shoe box at the entrance, one in the tokonoma, and one on a side table. Of course, they had a yukata for each guest available as well as towels for the sent. It was all very nice.
As far as complaints go, the only one I have is that the futons were a little short for me. Of course I'm a big American guy so I find it hard to fault them for that.
Spent one night here while visiting Kyoto and what a wonderful experience it was?! Staff were super polite and kind while the room was clinically clean with everything you would need in a traditionally styled room. It takes getting used to but overall it's a fantastic experience! I was sad leaving the next morning!
