Pocket Guide: Ipswich Cornhill Hotels

Ipswich is one of the oldest town's in Britain, and, depending on who you ask, it may just be the very oldest! Throughout much of this time, and certainly since medieval times at least, the Cornhill has been at the heart of the action, a centre of trade and government. Today it's the part of town where you will encounter some of Suffolk's most beautiful buildings, a variety of great eateries and plenty of familiar high street shops.

Discover the Heart of Ipswich from Hotels in Suffolk

If you're staying in hotels in Suffolk or Ipswich, there's a good chance you'll naturally gravitate towards the Cornhill, which is the town's main square. It's definitely worth stopping to admire the scenery, and feast your eyes on the over-the-top Victorian splendour of Ipswich Town Hall. The Town Hall was once the seat of trade and government in Ipswich, but now houses two art galleries and a café. Adjoining the Town Hall is the Corn Exchange, a compact theatre built in 1812. The Cornhill is also the site where you'll find Ipswich Market every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, so it's pretty likely your stay in a Suffolk Hotel will coincide with market day!

Easily Reached from Hotels in Ipswich

If the Cornhill could talk, it would tell of a long and intriguing history - sometimes dramatic and occasionally a little gruesome! Famously, there was a series of executions the Cornhill during the 16th Century, where Protestants were burnt at the stake for their heretical beliefs. Today, while this and other events are memorialised throughout the town, including a memorial to the martyrs located in Christchurch Park, the Cornhill is a much more peaceful and family-friendly place, well worth stopping by in you're in the Suffolk region.

Ipswich has many great hotels and guesthouses that are located within easy reach of the Cornhill, something for all budgets and tastes, including the Pentahotel Ipswich, the Novotel and Lattice Lodge Guest House - all of which are the perfect stepping stones from which to explore this fascinating Suffolk town. If you're staying in hotels in Suffolk outside of Ipswich, the Cornhill can be easily reached by car or by train, with Ipswich Train Station just a short walk away.
