I hadn't made ANY reservations before leaving, so I just needed a room. With such a low price, I prepared myself for the worst (college backpacking days). I arrived early (around 10am). I recognized the outside by the picture on Expedia. I lugged my suitcase, bag and carry-on up 3 flights of stairs. The hallway is also no frills. There was no reception - just the person with the reservation book + the room wasn't going to be ready before 2pm, since it was still occupied. I started to worry, but thought I'd just cancel at the last minute if I was really not happy. So I walked around and made it back by around 1:30pm, the room was ready. I breathed a sigh of relief because the room was perfectly nice: a typical no-frills, but clean room. The shower is minuscule. Look beyond all of that and you get an excellent deal. I was there for 1 night. AC worked well, bed was comfy and clean. Happy customer.

Centrally located in Madrid, in the district of Chueca, the Oxum Hostal is within walking distance of Plaza Cibeles, as well …More
Very central, lots of shops and restaurants
Nice refurbished apartments, well decorated. The building is a bit old, The stairs are not great and the lift is a little bit temperamental.
Would recommend it but the only thing I absolutely did not like was having the cleaning staff at 11am sharp waiting at the door on a Sunday morning - even if advised that Is Check out time. Also a little strict with check in between 3-8pm so you need to check your flights or will incur late check in penalty...
The staff was very nice. Nice and clean rooms and bathrooms. There were almost no queues to shared bathrooms. The breakfast was ok - choice of bread, cheese, ham and jams plus cakes. Interesting area - Chueca and close to all important sight-seeing points. Things to improve: We booked a triple room with 3 beds, but got one double and one single bed. Ultimately, it was OK, but it should be made clear at the point of booking. As well, access to fridge and electric pot after breakfast time would be nice. The stairs are a bit old and tricky, which may be a bit of an issue for those travelling with big luggage.
A down-at-heel central area in the 1980s, Chueca is now the fashionable gay heart of the city. The Plaza de Chueca is its epicentre, with countless terraces, bars and clubs in and around it. The surrounding streets are packed with cutting-edge shops and restaurants as well as traditional tapas bars. Don’t miss the Museo Municipal on Fuencarral, with its fine baroque entrance and Habsburg treasures within.
