The Vineyard

Stockcross, Newbury - Map
"Absolute gem of a hotel and restaurant."
An absolute must for a romantic meal and stay. Pay for the upgrade to a suite. It is worth it. Wine list is stunning and you can have over 100 wines by the glass. Amazing place. Only thing to watch is breakfast. Not included costs over £20 but is not that good really. Fairly average English breakfast for that money. But we will go again and just have continental version

Cliveden Estate, Maidenhead - Map
"Get out of the City - but access it"
With a 15 minute train ride you can be in the heart of the city - but stay in pure luxury. Stay in the Lady Astor Suite for your own private parterre with views in all directions - including the river, the gardens, and all comings and goings. It's high enough to be away from everything, but also the ability to be as if you own the world. Lots of room and luxury in the suite too, and since you tell everyone for dinner and breakfast your room by name, they'll know you're at the height of your game. I didn't see the other rooms, but other guests said they are all luxurious too. The Grounds are immense with a maze, boats to be had on the river (with guides - April - Oct) and one of the best meals I've had in years. Treat yourself by staying outside of London next time and train in (or take the Rolls in from the hotel)

Pocket Guide: Berkshire Relais & Chateaux Hotels

The Royal County of Berkshire is easily accessible from London and close to the M4. It's surrounded by Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Wiltshire, and so benefits from countryside that's both beautiful and quintessentially English. Berkshire is also close to the North Wessex Downs and South Downs, so it's the perfect county if you enjoy exploring nature reserves, ancient woodland and riverside rambles. Not forgetting the towns of Maidenhead, Newbury, Reading and Windsor, so whether you want to escape the crowds or hit the town, you'll find that a Relais & Chateaux hotel stay in Berkshire soothes both the heart and soul.

    What to See in Berkshire

Berkshire boasts a number of important historic and interesting attractions. If you're intending to go to Windsor, Windsor Guildhall near the castle is a 17th century building designed by Sir Christopher Wren and now home to the Windsor and Royal Borough Museum. Windsor Great Park is also close by too. Elsewhere, Ashdown House in Lambourn, Newbury is a Dutch style 17th century house associated with Elizabeth of Bohemia, the Winter Queen and sister of Charles I. If you're planning on staying near Maidenhead, Taplow Court is a Victorian mansion with roots dating back to the 11th century. Taplow once belonged to monks of the order of Merton Priory, but today it is a Buddhist study centre open throughout the year to celebrate special heritage days. And if you're anywhere near Newbury, make sure you head to the first class racecourse and the stunning Highclere Castle, which is part of the Ridgeway National Trail across the Downs.

    Eating and Drinking in Berkshire
