Pocket Guide: Barnard Castle Barnard Castle Hotels

This handsome town is revered for its Bowes Museum art collection and well-preserved Market Place, and was an inspiration for Charles Dickens, who visited the King's Head in the 1830s. From charming historic inns to picturesque country-themed bed and breakfasts, you can find a good selection of hotels in and near Barnard Castle.

About Barnard Castle

As you might expect, Barnard Castle takes its name from a medieval castle that has existed since at least the 12th Century. The site was owned by the wealthy Beauchamp family and King Richard III, and was one of the grandest castles in northern England, although it became derelict after the 15th Century. Despite being in ruins, the Grade I-Listed castle is nevertheless a remarkable, timeless sight, perhaps best viewed from the western banks of the River Tees.

Spend a Few Hours at the Bowes Museum

The Bowes Museum houses a splendid collection of European paintings, sculptures, ceramics and other great artworks, representing centuries of artistic development. The museum is housed in a magnificent 19th-century building designed to mimic a French château, and overlooks elegant French-themed gardens that are ideal for summer picnics and include a children's play area.

Many hotels in Barnard Castle are within walking distance of these attractions and a good range of restaurants serving everything from hearty British classics to vibrant Indian cuisine.

Visit Eggleston Hall Gardens, Just Six Miles from Barnard Castle

Known as the 'Secret Garden of the North', Eggleston Hall Gardens is a flamboyant oasis of exotic, unusual plants that you would rarely find in the same place anywhere else in the world. Gardens have existed at this site for well over 400 years, in fact, and the site also included the restored country house of Eggleston Hall. Visit the delightful tearoom, where you can enjoy a speciality tea or coffee with a delicious home-made cake or fresh scones.

Comfortable Rooms at Barnard Castle Hotels

Whichever hotel you choose, you'll sleep well with good quality single or double bedding. Almost all accommodation in Barnard Castle also includes WiFi access, which is often available free of charge in all rooms and most public areas.
