Scheveningen is one of the most popular seaside towns in the Netherlands and is the backdrop of the annual Unox Nieuwsjaarduik, a numbingly cold swim in the North Sea on New Year’s Day. But it’s not all shivers. In the summer, people head to Scheveningen for tanning under the sun, take a swim in the North Sea or stroll along the boulevard and on the Scheveningse pier. Also the Kite Festival and the International Fireworks Festival make Scheveningen a great place to visit in August and September.
Book a Hotel Close to the Beach
Most of the hotels are located within just 500 metres of the beach, with some sitting directly next to the beach. Get down here early with your towel, enjoy the sun and take a swim in the sea. You can also take a walk on the boulevard, where you can find a great selection of shops and restaurants. Don’t forget about the gigantic pier, where you can get your adrenaline pumping with some bungee jumping.
The museum, Beelden Aan Zee, is also a popular attraction – great for those colder days. Hidden in the dunes, the family Scholten has collected modern sculptures from international artists. You can also visit SeaLife, where you will be happy there is thick glass separating you from all the sharks and piranhas.
Besides the beach and the attractions, there are several annual events held in Scheveningen that attract thousands of people. On the first day of the year, about 10,000 people take a swim in the ice cold North Sea. Every summer, the International Fireworks Festival claim the Scheveningen skyline: it was named the most beautiful fireworks show of the world in 2013. Finally, the The Hague Beach Stadium is the backdrop of the Grand Slam Beach Volleyball and the FIFA Euro Soccer League.
