Enjoy wandering the capital town with its beautiful Cycladic architecture, whitewashed houses and paved streets. Meander around interesting shops and stop for some roasted mackerel and the Paros version of feta, mizithra, in one of the many restaurants.
You don’t have to look far to find ruins from the many conquerors that made their mark on the Cyclades. From the remains of Roman buildings to the archaic temple of Athena, there’s plenty for history buffs to enjoy. Look out for the Church of One Hundred Gates, one of the most impressive buildings in Paros.
You’ll find many of the hotels in Paros based in or near Parikia. Choose between beautiful boutique hotels, apartments overlooking the sea and luxurious four-star hotels with outdoor pools and a range of amenities. There are also some great budget hotels and apartments in Parikia, along with guesthouses full of character.
Give windsurfing, kite surfing and other family-friendly activities a go on the most popular beaches in Paros, Golden Beach and New Golden Beach, on the east of the island. Plan an afternoon hike on a tenth-century Byzantine path that leads to the picturesque mountain village of Lefkes, which was once the island’s capital. When you get to Lefkes, relax in the cafes, restaurants and bars that line the coast or visit its Folk Art Museum.
For more museums, stroll around the Archaeological Museum in Parikia, one of Greece’s most important museums. You’ll see the sixth-century BC statue of the Mermaid and a huge marble statue of Artemis, nearly 2,500 years old. In ancient times, Paros was most famous for its marble, which created many of the museums famous monuments. Take a trip to the marble quarries at Marathi to see the mining galleries and stone reliefs.
