Pocket Guide: Naxos

Naxos Island Hotels

The largest of the Cyclades Islands, Naxos has lush valleys, long sandy beaches and some impressive mountain terrain. Once the cultural capital of Classical Greece, Naxos also has some intriguing monuments, castles and enchanting villages.

From luxury beachfront hotels to charming B&Bs, there’s a good range of accommodation on Naxos Island and plenty of activities to enjoy.

Visiting Naxos Town

The capital of Naxos Island also known as Chora has an eclectic mix of architecture where the Cycladic style blends with Medieval buildings and ancient temples.

Check out the museums covering everything from archeology to folk history. Then cross the causeway over to the islet of Palatia to visit the remains of Portara. This gateway was once the entrance to the Temple of Apollo and dates back to the sixth-century BC.

Beaches and Watersports on Naxos Island

Naxos Island has a great choice of beaches, from secluded spots to the more popular resort areas. Head to the beaches of Agia Anna or Agios Prokopios for seaside taverns, beach bars and a lively atmosphere. In a pretty cove overlooked by Plaka village, you’ll find the quieter Plaka Beach with restaurants nearby.

There are good conditions on Naxos Island for a range of watersports, especially windsurfing. Many beaches have windsurfing centres as well as sports clubs which offer equipment for waterskiing, wakeboarding or even canoeing. If you want to do some diving, the Naxos Diving Centre offers training and the opportunity to explore shipwrecks and beautiful reefs.

Explore Naxos Island

The colourful villages dotted around the mountaintops of Naxos are well worth visiting. Aperathos is particularly magical with its beautiful churches and squares. Filoti is another stunning village built into the mountainside. For hiking adventures, walk from the church of Agia Marina near Danakos village to Mount Zas, the highest mountain in the Cyclades.

Towards the coast, the Cedar Forest of Alyko is another interesting site and a protected area of natural beauty. Look out for Wine Festivals and Feasts during the summer months for the opportunity to try the delicious local produce.

Mid-Range Hotels on Naxos Island

Most hotels on Naxos Island are along the west coast. There’s an abundance of mid-range accommodation around Naxos Town, within easy reach of the airport. These vary from budget guesthouses with rooftop terraces to family hotels and traditional Greek B&Bs full of charm. You can also find some lovely aparthotels further south towards the Cedar Forest of Alyko.

Luxury Accommodation on Naxos Island

Most four-star hotels on Naxos Island are to the south of Naxos Town and near the airport. From luxury villas with restaurants and beachfront hotels with family-friendly amenities, you’ll find there’s a good choice of high-end accommodation. All within walking distance of the beach and well placed for trips to the waterpark if you’re looking for family entertainment.

Naxos Island combines sun, sea and sand with breathtaking landscapes and a wealth of culture. With so many great hotels to choose from, this is a fabulous place to stay for families, couples and friends.
