The Mercedes-Benz Arena
Originally built in 1933, the Mercedes-Benz Arena is now home to the German Bundesliga football club VfB Stuttgart, but in the immediate post-war years, US troops used it to play baseball. The Mercedes-Benz Arena has been known as the Century Stadium, the Kampfbahn, and, for a long period, the Neckarstadion, named after the neighbouring Neckar River. After a major refurbishment from the late 80s to the early 90s in preparation for the 1993 World Athletics Championships, the city council dedicated the stadium to Gottlieb Daimler, whose company had provided much of the funding. Then for the 2008-9 football season, it was christened the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
VfB Stuttgart have been a near-permanent fixture in the Bundesliga, German football’s top flight, since its inception in 1963. Stuttgart are five-time winners of the Bundesliga, but for an especially impassioned atmosphere get tickets to the Baden-Württemberg derby match against local rivals Karlsruher SC.
Indoor Sports in the SCHARRena
A striking feature of the Mercedes-Benz Arena is the SCHARRena, an indoor sports hall which blends elegantly into the stadium’s architectural curves and can accommodate over 2,000 visitors for a variety of sports, including volleyball, handball, fencing and gymnastics. The SCHARRena also has a great panoramic view of the main stadium.
The Mercedes-Benz Arena offers a variety of guided tours to fans and visitors alike. The Match Day Tour is a V.I.P. journey through the stadium, from the hallowed turf to the home-team’s changing room, and acts as a thrilling prologue to the big match itself. There are Legends Tours hosted by former VfB Stuttgart stars, and the Kids Tour, complete with a prize shootout, makes a very special treat or birthday present for the younger football fan in your life.
