Most famous for being the baptism and burial place of William Shakespeare, the Holy Trinity Church, a Grade I-Listed building, is one of the most visited churches in England. The 13th century landmark, which in 2016 marked the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, is incredibly well preserved for its age, and also features the grave of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare's beloved wife.
A charming, typically English riverside town with many attractive medieval landmarks, Stratford-upon-Avon welcomes millions of visitors each year and has existed since at least the Saxon period. As well as being the birthplace and burial place of Shakespeare, it is also home to the world-renowned Royal Shakespeare Theatre, which reopened in 2010 following a substantial refurbishment
A Brief History of Holy Trinity Church
A church has existed at this site since the 8th Century, and the site was occupied by monks for many years, remaining an important monastic site until the King Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th Century. Soon after his birth on April 26th 1564, William Shakespeare was baptised here, having been born at the half-timbered house on nearby Henley Street.
What to See and Where to Stay
The scenic church, which is adjacent to the River Avon, has an impressive medieval font and Clopton Chapel, intricately designed stained glass windows, and a striking nave that was restored by local residents after the Reformation. The building is well within reach of numerous Stratford-upon-Avon hotels, from the friendly and affordable Falcon Hotel with its fine Tudor architecture, to the immaculate and hospitable Hallmark Hotel The Welcombe
