Pocket Guide: Lavenham Corpus Christi Guildhall, Sudbury, England, United Kingdom Hotels

Corpus Christ Guildhall, also known as Lavenham Guildhall, is a Grade I listed building located just outside of Sudbury, in the picturesque village of Lavenham, Suffolk. One of the finest timber-framed buildings in the country, Lavenham Hall was originally constructed in the 16th Century and is now managed by the National Trust. This magnificent Tudor building makes for a great family day out if you're staying in any hotels in Suffolk or the surrounding areas, boasting a lovely period tearoom and plenty of activities for children.

Step Back in Time from Hotels in Suffolk

Back in medieval times, wool was the backbone of British business and it was a roaring woollen trade that filled the coiffeurs of successive monarchs. In East Anglia, the village of Lavenham became the centre of the wool trade, growing rich off the back of sheep - literally! Back in the 16th Century, guilds were established so that merchants and craftsmen could protect their business; Corpus Christi Guildhall became the guildhall for the wool trade in Lavenham, founded in 1529. Because the wool and cloth trade was so prosperous in those days, Lavenham Guildhall became the town's main meeting place and centre of trade.

Easily Reached from Hotels in Lavenham

Today, Lavenham Guildhall is one of Suffolk's most popular attractions, offering families a fascinating glimpse back into Tudor times. At the Guildhall, there are lots of family-friendly activities to enjoy, including dressing up in traditional Tudor costume. Many of the best hotels in Suffolk are close by, including the Swan Hotel located on Lavenham High Street, a medieval timber-framed hall that bears more than a passing resemblance to Lavenham Guildhall, which is only a short walk away.

Lavenham is one of the most picturesque parts of Suffolk and the Guildhall is just one of the beautiful buildings in the village - another notable example is the 15th-century St. Peter and St. Paul Church. The village has a lot to keep you and your family occupied for a day or an afternoon, with many charming shops and eateries dotted around the place, particularly along the picturesque high street.
