Pocket Guide: Sudbury Gainsborough's House Hotels

Gainsborough House is a museum and birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough, located in the town of Sudbury, Suffolk. Thomas Gainsborough is one of Britain's most famous artists, a master of landscape painting - and this charming museum exhibits many of his most famous works, including the Portrait of Harriet, Viscountess Tracy and the Study for Diana and Actaeon. Gainsborough House is a great place to visit, whether you have a love for art or are staying in a Suffolk Hotel and wish to explore a fascinating 16th-century residence.

Discover the Birthplace of a Famous Artist from Suffolk Hotels

Gainsborough house was initially built in the 1520s and became the residence of the Gainsborough family in 1722. This beautiful building was under private ownership until the early-20th Century but was then converted into a museum and art gallery. Today, Gainsborough House is one of the top attractions in the market town of Sudbury. Alongside a rich collection of Gainsborough works, there are paintings by other renowned artists and a selection of museum objects, such rare books, and Gainsborough memorabilia including a studio cabinet, pocket-watch and paint scraper.

Easily Reached from Hotels in Sudbury

Gainsborough House is open seven days a week, and as well as an art gallery and museum, visitors can enjoy the recently refurbished shop and house gardens. Keep a look out for the Mulberry Tree, which was planted way back in the 1600s and is practically as old as the house itself! There are lots of quality hotels and guesthouses in Sudbury, all of which are within walking distance of Gainsborough House, including Clay Hall House Bed & Breakfast, Long Melford Inn and the patriotically named George and Dragon Hotel.

The market town of Sudbury in Suffolk is perhaps most famous as the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough, and there is even a statue of the artist proudly standing on Market Hill. There's more to the town than Gainsborough, however, and it boasts many lively pubs, retail outlets, and leisure facilities. The town is easily reached via Sudbury Railway Station, which links to Colchester and London, and by car, served by the A131 and the A134, and is well worth stopping by if you're staying in nearby hotels in Suffolk.
