Pocket Guide: Carpinteria

Visit Carpinteria

Carpinteria is a sleepy beachfront suburb located 11 miles southeast of downtown Santa Barbara. Known locally as Carp, it adopted its name from the Churmash Indians, who would use their carpentry skills to build their sea-faring canoes here. Now it attracts a different kind of seafarer – surfers – thanks to its position as California’s legendary surf spot, Rincon Beach.

Carpinteria is surrounded by polo fields and avocado orchards and is famous as the home of the prestigious Santa Barbara Polo Club, and the California Avocado Festival, a popular three-day event held each October.

Getting to or from downtown Santa Barbara is easy. It’s a 15-minute drive along the coast, or you can hire a bike and take one of the cycling trails which run between the two. It's also a stop on the Pacific Surfliner train route, which traverses the southern California coast.

Where to Stay in Carpinteria

If you’re looking to escape the vibrant hustle and bustle of Santa Barbara, head east to Carpinteria, where the town's select hotels, inns and beach guesthouses offer a more low-key stay. There is a number of well-known hotel and motel chains on offer, many with pools, bars and restaurants.

Enjoy the Beach from Your Hotel in Carpinteria

Tucked away between the hills and the Pacific Ocean, Carpinteria's Rincon Beach is one of California's top surf destinations. Learn to master the board with lessons from one of the surf schools, or try your hand at paddleboarding or windsurfing. If you’re with young kids, Carpinteria State Beach is the place to go, as it is often regarded as one of the world’s safest beaches thanks to its gentle and shallow reef-protected waters.

Other attractions include Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve, between State Beach and Rincon Beach, where seals and sea lions live at the Carpinteria Harbor Seal Preserve and Rookery. Learn about the town’s Chumash history in the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History.

Carpinteria’s Bar and Dining Scene

Carpinteria dining scene is more casual than its swanky Santa Barbara neighbour. Head to Linden Avenue, Carp’s main drag, where you'll find the town’s best coffee shops, bars and Mexican restaurants.
