Cala Bona is a traditional fishing town and holiday resort on the east coast of Mallorca, the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands. It is connected to Cala Millor in the south by a scenic promenade and is a short drive from Port Verd del Mar to the north. Palma de Mallorca Airport, located on the island’s west coast, is a 1-hour drive away.
Cala Bona was once a quaint fishing village in the natural harbour formed between Cap d’es Pinar and the peninsula of Punta de n’Amer but from the 1960s onwards, along with Cala Millor, it gradually became a major holiday destination.
Consisting mainly of flat land and streets, Cala Bona attracts a wide range of travellers who come to admire a more tranquil side to the island. Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, in particular, are attracted by its promise of unspoilt landscape and peaceful nature walks.
With a picturesque harbour, a mixture of rocky and sandy beaches, quality hotels and apartments, a good selection of restaurants and shops and plenty of fun activities to entertain its visitors, it should come as no surprise that Cala Bona is a holiday destination that’s forever on the up.
Being a small village, there are only 14 hotels in Cala Bona itself, which can get booked up very quickly during peak season. Many tourists return to Cala Bona year after year and book their rooms far in advance, so be proactive about booking early to beat the regulars.
If Cala Bona hotels get booked up, there are many more hotels in Cala Millor, a little over a kilometre away, while nearby Sa Como is also a convenient home base for exploring the region.
With hotels ranging from 2 to 4 stars, and a number of guesthouses, B&Bs and private rentals, there’s an accommodation option for everyone in Cala Bona.
The 4-star Catalonia del Mar boasts a breathtaking location on the marina, meaning that many of its 189 rooms have sweeping views across the harbour. Guests will also have access to a sauna and full-service spa, so relaxation is practically guaranteed
Apart-hotels are ideal for families and friends travelling together and combine the best of private rentals and hotel luxury. Kitchenettes come decked out with all the latest appliances, so you can save on meals by whipping up your own feasts, but you can still kick back and unwind with swimming pools, lounge bars and state-of-the-art fitness facilities. The Marins Playa in Cala Millor, for example, is situated a handy 3 kilometres from the Cala Millor beach.
There are also private apartments and villas in Cala Bona and the surrounding areas that can be booked for longer stays.
The high season in Cala Bona runs from June till early September. This is when families and couples tend to flock to the village. March 'til May, September and October are preferred by older couples for being quieter.
The centre of the village can easily be explored on foot along the long, flat pedestrian promenade or by bicycle along the cycle track. One popular walk will take you to the 17th century Castell de n’Amer watchtower on the Punt de n’Amer headland, south of Cala Millor. The area around the headland is a 200-hectare protected nature reserve and is representative of what the east coast of Mallorca must have looked like before tourism arrived. It is a peaceful oasis away from the high-rise hotels and apartments, and visitors can see local plant specimens, dunes and beautiful species of marine birds.
There are 3 rocky beaches and 1 sandy beach in Cala Bona, but for larger stretches head for Cala Millor or Sa Coma, 6 kilometres south; alternatively, you could make your way to Playa de Palma on the western coast of the island, which is widely regarded as the island’s cultural hub and hottest seaside spot.
One of the most popular activities in Cala Bona are the balloon rides. Taking an early morning hot air balloon, you can have the magical experience of watching the sun rise from thousands of metres above ground and see the stunning Mallorcan countryside in style. All you need to do is ask your hotel for booking information.
There are also scenic glass-bottomed boat trips from Cala Bona to Cala Ratjada 17 kilometres north or to Porto Cristo 9 kilometres south. It's a good idea to take your swimming costume along so you can have a quick cooling dive and swim from the boat.
For entertaining small children with bouncy castles, trampolines and electric cars, take them to the Fantasy Park in the Cala Millor village. It’s located next to the Parc de la Mar Gardens in the centre and is open every day till 9 p.m. in the summer.
