"There was evidence of smoking - cigarette ends on the flat roof outside the only functioning window. The chair was broken. The continental breakfast was not served on time and was meagre and very poor. The staff were friendly however and with a bit of thought and better planning it could easily improve."

The staff at The Rose and Crown are some of the friendliest I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. We were down for a wedding, and they were incredibly accommodating and welcoming.
The room was clean and quiet, and breakfast was cooked fresh. The village is small, and bit out of the way, but offers excellent walking trails.

Everything in Shaftoes have been done to a very high standard. Dave could not have done more to make our stay better. Recommends eating places, booked a table and sorted out a menu for us that suited our taste. Verry good knowledge of local places to visit.

Very prompt friendly and efficient book in even though staff were preparing for a busy night, room immaculate and clean all new bathroom. The drive to and from the hotel was breathtaking especially if you head for Carlisle like I did. Thanks for having me I hope to visit again. Best wishes Michael

Lovely hotel in a lovely location. Large room all the facilities were first class, free use of sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, etc which made the stay even more enjoyable. Will definitely be returning 👍

this is a great option for a visit to Durham if you are prepared to stay outside of the city. Best value for money I have experienced in a long time . Breakfast fantastic something you would pay in excess of £12 in other accommodation Sonia and the rest of her staff are very welcoming . There is only one place I will be staying should I visit the area in the future

The best area to stay in Blanchland is within the village itself.
Blanchland is a small, historic village located in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village is primarily centred around its Abbey, with a few streets of stone cottages, a village green, and the Blanchland Abbey church. It's incredibly compact, meaning everything is within a few minutes' walk.
Couples looking for a tranquil escape will find Blanchland ideal. The village offers a peaceful setting for walks in the surrounding countryside, with easy access to public footpaths. It's superb for unwinding and enjoying the natural beauty, with opportunities for stargazing due to the dark skies.
For those interested in history and a quiet retreat, staying within the village provides direct access to the significant Blanchland Abbey and its architecture.
When is the best time to go to Blanchland?

July and August are the warmest months, ideal for those looking to enjoy the full range of outdoor pursuits, from hiking and cycling to simply relaxing by the River Derwent. Families will find these months great for outdoor adventures, with plenty of space for children to explore the natural surroundings.
September brings cooler temperatures and the stunning colours of autumn foliage, making it a wonderful time for photographers or anyone who appreciates dramatic landscapes.
