Pocket Guide: Budleigh Salterton Bicton Park Botanical Gardens Hotels

Devon is famous for its dramatic landscapes, rugged coastlines and historic and cultural attractions. All these are within easy reach of your Devon hotel or guesthouse when you come here to explore one of the United Kingdom's most fascinating and varied counties. Bicton Park Botanical Gardens makes an especially good destination for a day's outing, as it is set in some of the most beautiful countryside of the region and has a number of attractions that are suitable for all ages of visitor.

Devon Hotels for Bicton Park Botanical Gardens

Set in the incredible countryside of the South Devon Coast, Bicton Park Botanical Gardens is no less than three centuries old and at one time was acclaimed as being the finest garden in the whole of England. The central feature is the elegant Palm House, which was built in the early 1820s and is older than its counterpart in Kew. 18,000 small panes of glass were used in its construction, along with an equal number of thin glazing bars. The garden has a stunning setting between high walls that lead down to canal-shaped water gardens with fountains and a lake. It's the most perfect place to stroll around on a balmy summer's afternoon.

A Day Out at Bicton Park from Devon Hotels

There are other attractions at Bicton Park apart from the main formal gardens. There are also rock gardens and a fernery nearby, where you can see an interesting shell collection housed in a stone hut. After wandering through the arboretum and pinetum, visit the large museum to learn all about how agricultural life in this part of England has changed over the past two centuries. It's a fascinating story of increased mechanisation and changing patterns of life for the locals, and there are many interesting exhibits to enjoy. If you're coming with kids, a highlight of the visit will be a ride on the miniature railway which runs right around the garden. Based at a nearby B&B or guesthouse, make the short trip to Bicton Park Botanic Gardens for a fun and educational day out for the whole family.
