While the Grand Hotel is steeped in history and has multiple services to enjoy - the upkeep of the property is not as advertised. The rooms are slightly dated and have not been refurbished in quite some time. Throughout the hotel you noticed patched flooring, or chipped paint, etc. - the 1881 restaurant is marketed as a romantic and unique dining experience - the actual restaurant bears no resemblance to what is marketed. Otherwise the hotel itself is fine - the staff are very friendly and attentive. And the location is fantastic.

There were a few staff members that were really polite, friendly and helpfull, but there were some staff on the front desk and especialy in the restaurant that were very rude and completely over looked me as a guest and made me feel racially discriminated, also a few staff members on front desk & retaurant ruined my birthday and I had to raise a complaint to get a table on my Birthday. I told the front desk staff it was my birthday the next day and on the day itself. I was having car trouble, so couldnt give an exact time of return, but I emphasied I will be returning to hotel late afternoon as staying there for my holidays. The lady on front desk told me not to worry and as Im on my own they can squeeze me in. Even so I emphasied it was my birthday & i'll be having dinner at the Grand. Still the staff member did not book me into retaurant beforehand, which caused me a lot of hassle on my return and I was told NO booking was available as front desk did not relay it was my birthday. Then I had to go restaurant to try and sort this mess out myself and when I raised a complaint, The Ops manager sat me down to give me a talking to, rather than tell his staff were they went wrong and ruined my Birthday. Plus on the 5th morning I was told by retaurant staff I am not allowed to were my stylish PJ's to breakfast? After spending thousands on their rooms, as resident guest I don't want to be told what to wear by staff. I also got infection from the Hotel Pool & in dire pain since.

The staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. The hotel, unfortunately, was not. I suspect the Grand was grand, in the same way I was young. Both statements were true once. Unfortunately the passage of time has done for both of us. Hotel was very tired in a number of places- both public (the pool/gym area and general exterior had definitely seen better days- some time ago) and private (we had a two bedroom/lounge suite- bedroom and bathroom were in good condition, whereas the lounge was very tired with watermarked furniture, old plastic chairs on balcony etc). All felt like modest investment would make a real difference- but clearly had not been done. Small example- having checked in to the suite for the week (quoting price impolite- but let us say it was middle 4 figures for the week)- first thing we did was go to the supermarket to buy some water for the room. For the money, I would have thought that they could have stretched to a couple of bottles of Buxton. Ordered a coffee at 10:15pm, to be told I couldn't have one as the machine had now been cleaned. There was no bottled water in the restaurant bar on Sunday (fair enough- hot weekend/wedding reception may have caused stock issues)- but still no water by Thursday night- seriously? Overall impression was that where money could be saved, it would be. Unfortunately the price asked was at odds with what was given in return. Real shame- as the location is brilliant and, as mentioned, the staff are an asset.
